5 Simple uses for Peppermint Oil including Peppermint Crisp Slice {recipe}

Peppermint_Crisp_Chloe_Taylor

I love me some good ol’ Peppermint.

He is refreshing and uplifting, great for digestion, and makes an epic husband for Cacao (see recipe below for proof!).

Did you know that Peppermint is a hybrid of Watermelon and Spearmint? Say what?!

I could bore you with the history of mint but I know what you came here for so here are the top 5 ways I use Peppermint in my home daily:

Food Flavouring

Obviously this is my top pick for Peppermint oil and I have a ripper raw Peppermint Crisp slice for you below (also see my Raw Vegan Choc Minted slice with Dark Chocolate Ganache  and Raw Mint Pattie Slice or download my free eBook for After Dinner Bliss Balls). Seriously good!

I also like to add a few drops to my Chocolate Superfood smoothies, whipped coconut cream choc mousse, and sometimes my hot chocolates too.

If you are concerned about ingesting essential oils for flavour let me put your mind at ease- if you are purchasing anything from the supermarket that has ‘natural food flavouring’ chances are you’re already consuming essential oils (but who can vouch for their quality?).

doTERRA pride themselves on producing the purest essential oils in the world so I’ll happily use a few drops of their peppermint oil in my raw treats over supermarket peppermint essence ANY day. These essential oils are actually imported into Australia as a food with instructions on their labelling to use for flavour, but if you still have doubts check out doTERRA Science for some interesting reads.

Enhance your Workout

A 2013 study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition looked at how supplemental peppermint oil (0.05ml peppermint essential oil in 500ml mineral water) could affect exercise parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate, and spirometry parameters including forced vital capacity (FVC), peak expiratory flow rate (PEF), and peak inspiratory flow (PIF).  They found a 25% increase in time to exhaustion (so imagine pumping out 15 reps instead of 12) and also an increase in Lung function and decrease in blood pressure. Winning.

I’ll be adding 1 drop of my Peppermint oil to my morning drink before gym tomorrow- Bring on Pump class!

Respiratory Support

Ever had a big whiff of peppermint oil right from the bottle? You can’t help but sit up straighter as your chest expands and opens wide. Peppermint oil is one of the oils in doTERRA’s Easy Air blend (aka Breathe) to help do just that- open and help clear the airways. I love popping a few drops of peppermint oil in my diffuser with some lemon oil when I am feeling congested to help me breath easier.

After Sun Soothing

While I’m sure we all remember the Slip Slop Slap campaign and have been drilled about sunscreen since we were little- in Summertime Down under sometimes it is just impossible NOT to get sunburned when having fun outside!

So we make a really simple after sun lotion using a base of aloe vera gel mixed with filtered water and around 8 drops of peppermint oil, 10 drops of lavender oil and 4-6 drops of frankincense oil.

The peppermint is super soothing and has analgesic properties which is exactly what you want after being toasted, while the lavender and frankie boy get to work at a cellular level to help our bodies recover from the trauma.

Freshen Up

Not many things beat walking out of the house in the morning with minty fresh breath (especially if you had some sneaky garlic chicken for tea last night!).

I’m not gonna lie, I don’t personally make my own toothpaste yet (though I’ve heard it is a simple mix of bicarb soda, coconut oil and peppermint essential oil)- I do use peppermint oil in water as a mouth rinse after brushing my teeth and it packs a powerful punch!

You could also mix up some water and peppermint oil a little spray bottle to keep in your handbag to use a breath freshener through the day. Simples.
